Personal Consultant / Life Transition(s)
Change & Transformation
Neal’s passion and his work focus on helping individuals (and their organizations) figure out who they really want to be, and then helping them get there. Sometimes the work focuses on getting ‘unstuck’, other times it’s more about getting in touch with our own inherent wisdom—it’s always about developing greater clarity, harnessing inner resources, and then moving forward.
Periods of Life Transition often offer powerful opportunity for this work.
Dr. King no longer offers psychotherapy or counseling services, but is truly your personal and/or organizational consultant – listening, serving as a sounding board and offering perspective from his wide range of life and work experience. Most of all, he seeks to assist you in making the best personal or organizational choices possible.
Neal is available face-to-face, via Skype or by phone. Persons assuming, or in leadership positions, and persons in various life transitions might particularly benefit from his services.
Personal Consultant services are confidential and can involve as few or as many persons as the client chooses, from one-on-one consultation to group or retreat facilitation. Neal seeks to customize each Personal Consultant relationship to the needs of the client.
About Neal King
Neal’s own non-linear path, from undergraduate work in English, through several years in higher ed administration, the restaurant business, traveling the world and starting an MBA, to a doctorate in Counseling Psychology, is a testament to his enthusiasm for exploration and his willingness to embrace what actually works, not just what’s expected.
Neal received his BA in English from St. Mary’s College of California and his MA and PhD in Counseling Psychology from UC Berkeley. In the field of education, he has served as professor, dean and college president, managing multi-million dollar budgets. He served four times as a campus CEO, twice in national systems, in both the for–profit and not for profit sectors. He also worked as a high school English teacher, counselor, and school director.
In the restaurant business, Neal worked as dishwasher, bartender, waiter, sous chef and manager—in a variety of settings from country café to fine dining.
Neal has been licensed in California as a psychologist since 1988. He maintained a private psychotherapy practice in the San Francisco Bay Area for 14 years.
He has served in a variety of board and administrative capacities in volunteer roles with various organizations dedicated to: service learning; quality assurance and accreditation in higher education; international education; and, fostering classical music as an instrument of cross cultural understanding. These organizations include the United Nations, the International Association of University Presidents and the World University Consortium.
In addition to having visited—for professional as well as personal reasons—over 50 countries, he has lived and worked in the US, the UK, Laos, Algeria and France.
Personally, Neal is a “Navy Brat” who enjoys travel, the outdoors, hiking, writing, quality time with family and friends—and is a semi-professional photographer, with a great love for the visual arts.
